Summer of Soul

A change of pace!  The Anti-racism Ministry Team invites everyone to join us on Tuesday, February 8, at 6:30 pm to watch Summer of Soul, an uplifting film of a great African American music festival. In this frigid weather and stressful political time, we take time to celebrate African American talent, culture, and spirit.

The Harlem Cultural Festival, like Woodstock, was filmed in the summer of 1969.  Summer of Soul resurrects the long-neglected footage of these dazzling performances. Artists include Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, and other well-known stars of gospel, blues, and rock.  Interviews with the musicians and producers are interspersed with performances to recall the racial climate of the time.

The movie runs for two hours, and we’ll have a brief discussion around 8:30.  The film is also available on Hulu. We will send a zoom link on February 8.
